The political climate has been one of hostility from the left and the right as the election drew near, the right defended Trump and the left hoped that Biden would usher in a new era, Americans went to the polls and voted in Joe Biden as the 46th president of the United States of America. It was a contentious election as Donald Trump and the Republicans allege voter fraud in a drama that we are going to see for some time, yet this result seems to mostly cool the tensions but the Republicans will challenge these results.
As results came in on Election Night, Donald Trump was leading in a majority of the battleground states, his re-election seemed likely as he held the rust belt and the deep south, however as more ballots were counted and days went on, Joe Biden flipped Wisconsin, Michigan, Arizona and eventually Pennsylvania to restore the blue wall and win the presidency. Joe Biden ended up flipping Georgia, a state that hadn't gone Democrat since Bill Clinton in 1996, this was a symbolic coup for the Democrats as changing demographics have put Georgia as a new battleground state. Donald Trump also hoped to flip Democrat strongholds, mainly Minnesota which he just barely lost in 2016, however for Donald Trump it would not be.

Joe Biden appealed for unity at a very divided time, the nation is currently the one with the most COVID-19 cases and deep ideological division between the right and the left, Joe Biden has consistently said that he was the right man to unite the Democratic Party and eventually the nation, he has also said that he would reach across the aisles to heal the country, sympathising with the ones that voted for the losing candidate in the process, it is clear that Joe Biden can talk the talk, but uniting the United States and the world will be easier said than done.
